Key Motorcycle Rules

Rule 83 — Positioning:
• Keep left on right-hand bends, right on left-hand bends (for visibility)
• BUT always stay in your lane

Rule 88 — Following Distance:
• Minimum 2-second gap
Double in wet weather
• Leave extra room to see around vehicles ahead

2022 Update — Hierarchy of Road Users:
Pedestrians are most vulnerable, then cyclists, then motor vehicles. Larger vehicles have greater responsibility towards smaller ones.

Lane Filtering

🔹 Lane filtering is legal in the UK — but you must be careful!

Best practices:
• Keep to maximum 20 mph when filtering
• On motorways, only filter between lanes 1 and 2
• Watch for cars changing lanes
• Don't filter across solid white lines
• Be extra careful near junctions
• Give way to pedestrians at crossings
• Legal but be sensible!

Motorway Rules

Learners and bikes under 50cc cannot use motorways
• Use the left lane unless overtaking
• National speed limit: 70 mph
• Hard shoulder is for emergencies only
• Can filter between lanes 1 and 2 in heavy traffic
• Keep safe distance from HGVs
• Always do mirror + lifesaver checks before changing lanes

🔹 London bus lanes: Motorcycles can use many London bus lanes, but check the signs — rules vary by lane.

Headlights & Roundabouts

• Dipped headlights are compulsory:
— In low visibility (fog, rain, etc.)
— Between sunset and sunrise
• Many riders keep dipped headlights on at all times — recommended for visibility
• Some newer bikes have automatic daytime running lights (DRL)

Roundabouts:
• Left exit: left signal + left lane
• Straight on: no signal approaching, left lane
• Right/full circle: right signal + right lane, then left signal before your exit
• Always give way to traffic from the right
