🎓 CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)

Your first step to riding a motorcycle on UK roads

What is CBT?

CBT is a one-day training course you must complete before riding a moped or motorcycle on UK roads. It's not a test — you'll receive your certificate as long as you show you can ride safely.

🔹 Age: 16+ for mopeds (50cc), 17+ for motorcycles (125cc)

What Happens on the Day? (5 Elements)

CBT consists of five elements and usually takes 6-8 hours:

Element A: Introduction and eyesight check
Element B: On-site training (controls, balance, technique)
Element C: On-site riding (practical application)
Element D: On-road training (traffic rules, hazard awareness)
Element E: On-road riding (minimum 2 hours in real traffic)

⚠️ The instructor must be satisfied you're competent at each stage. Extra training days may be needed.

Cost & Validity

💷 Cost: £150–£250 (varies by school and location, London tends to be pricier)
Usually includes: training, motorcycle & helmet hire, insurance for the day

🔹 Your CBT certificate (DL196) is valid for 2 years. You'll need to retake it after expiry unless you've passed your full test.
